In the Cahita dialect, the word "Ahome" means "Two Waters"
— it's the place where the waters of the river Fuerte joins those flowing into the Bay of Santa Maria. During the precolombian era, it functioned as the seat of the Ahome and Zuaque indians, who settled on the banks of the river. —» Read more.

Located just 90 minutes east of Los Mochis, El Fuerte is northern Sinaloa's picturesque colonial city. It was founded in 1564 by the Spanish conquistador Don Francisco de Ibarra, the first explorer of the lofty western Sierra Madre mountains.
